BLACKS IN BANKING: Financial Literacy Series; “MONEY TALKS”
Desire Health Magazine, Inc. has made a commitment and will continue writing and promoting a series of financial literacy content in every edition, where we will enlist outside sources to assist us in this change in economic structure, where we intend to let these traditional banks know, that they’re here to service us, not the other way around, and not only to inform our large diverse readership audience about finances… but to Empower them!
As I continue in my quest to become financially independent, yet once again I find that the traditional ways of banking were not, and will not ever be designed for a person of color’s friend.
Here I am thinking that I’m a small businessman… so I thought? until I walked into my Bank in San Bernardino, California in the year 2016 where I live, and was subjected to being reduced to a mere vagabond where I had been a loyal customer trying to survive financially, personally, and professionally for the past eight (8) years.
Granted it be that the negative experiences in not being able to transact traditional banking with them on at least two (2) other occasions (2010 and 2014), I stayed loyal and continued to patronize and give them the little bit of financial business that I had, and not totally to my surprise, but none the less… to my surprise! I was denied being able to cash one of my companies checks, because the bank manager refused to do so, or even to give me the verification stamp and signature that was needed to take it to the Bank that the payment was drawn on, and told me that if I didn’t want to to send it back to the company (10 additional days) and take my company’s name off of it, then I could go see if a predatory check cashing facility would cash it for me, and then, and only then could I come back and pay the overdraft fees that I owed to them (The Bank), and make a deposit and credit card payment in the other two (2) open accounts that I have with them already.
And it did not matter that Banks’ were being found guilty and sanctioned for committing “Fraud” themselves!
And I might add that I was one of the victims of said Fraud, called “SLAMMING” where sales people were giving bank customers products and services that they did not need, or purchase, and I am awaiting my reimbursement check from them for that… wondering if they’re going to cash that check for me when it arrives?
Well people, I’m here to tell you with all of the woes, that we’re having in America, it’s high time that we begin, to not only explore different methods and begin moving away from the traditional banks, but that we do it, in as an expedient manner as possible!
We have to let the mainstream banks know that we don’t work for them, and that they’re only in business to service us and our money, it has been far too long that we (African Americans) as the number #1 consumers in the world let them know that we are not going to continue to be treated and subjected to second class citizenry any longer.
We are requesting and asking that our large readership audience begin to participate and assist us with addressing these issues, in the form of giving us feedback, and personal experiences that they’ve encountered in this area of being denied what you think or traditional services, by going to the (CONTACT BOX) on our website and leaving your comments for future references. http://www.dhmi.org
Then and only then, will we as consumers begin to have our voices heard and move towards program and policy changes.
It’s a well known cliché’ that “Money Talks”, now it’s time to pick up your money and walk!
It’s the only way that mainstream America will begin to take us seriously.
10) Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
11) And I shall rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.
12) And all lands shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delight some land, saith the Lord of hosts.
